The months of July and August can be incredibly hot in
Cyprus. April is very pleasant, many of the flowers are
still in bloom and there is usually a gentle breeze,
ideal for sight seeing, but still enough sun to get a
tan. The nights in winter can be very cold, so go
prepared. |

Cyprus means
different things to different people. A popular holiday
destination, a place to retire and a place, “to live the life”.
Cyprus is unique, the majority of natives that live in the
south, speak Greek, but they are not Greek, they are Cypriot,
there are also Turkish speaking Cypriots, but they are not
Turkish, they are Cypriot. You can find out more about the
divide of North and South in the section Divided
Island
There is also a small Maronite
community, Maronites
are Catholic Christian people of Arabic origin, who came
and settled into Cyprus 1200 years ago from Lebanon. They speak
their native tongue a dialect Arabic, which is mixed with many
Greek and Turkish words. Most live in four Maronite villages,
Asomatos, Karpashia, Kormakitis and Agia Marina, villages in the
north of Northern Cyprus.

Cyprus must have something good, through most of history
this island has been ruled by almost everyone but the Cypriots.
The name Cyprus comes from the Greek word for
copper, Romans used copper extensively and they received
their copper from Cyprus and was known as the metal of Cyprus.
In Latin it was aes Cyprium- the 'metal of Cyprus', it was
shortened to cyprium and then corrupted to cuprum. The ancient
Greek word for copper is chalkos. Mined extensively in the
past, the places where the island was once rich in copper can be
seen in the landscape. She was once rich in salt, now strict
regulations are in place for salt mining. But olives, fruit and
vegetables are plenty, of size and flavour which makes eating a
joy.
The southern coastline from east to west is now mostly holiday
destinations, from the nightlife centre of the world, Ayia Napa
down to the luxury of Coral Bay; there is a resort to suit every
taste.
Within a short time you can be in 'real' Cyprus, whether that is
a trip up into the mountains or to the northern coast line. Even
in the big resorts real Cyprus can be found, the coffee shops,
tavernas and the kebab houses where time is spent relaxing,
telling tales, and of course enjoying a drink.
Many intended quiet evenings in a taverna have resulted in
impromptu singing and dancing, going on till the dawn breaks. In
Cyprus you do not need a reason or an invitation to have a
party, to be alive and in good company is reason enough.
In Cyprus, age is no barrier to have fun, age discrimination
does not exist. If you can stand, you can dance on tables,
dancing on bottles is another matter.
