Proverbs

The Cypriots and Greeks have a proverb for every occasion. To the English speaker they seem amusing after translation.
There are many wise words in the sayings below.

Welcome is the best cheer.

In hospitality it is the spirit that counts.

It is the men who makes a city.

Thinking evil is much the same as doing it.

I live too near a wood to be scared by owls.

If the sun shines while it rains, the devil is beating his mother.

Men who have lost heart never yet won a trophy.

The lamb has the name and the kid (young goat) has the taste

Milk the cow, but do not pull off the udder.

Poor men's words have little weight.

Seize the end and you will hold the middle.

The child who gets a stepmother also gets a stepfather.

The mills of the gods grind slowly, but they grind exceeding small.

The net of the sleeper catches fish.

As the shepherd sleeps, the farther the goats wander off

The old cats like the young mice

There's many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip.

We look like the wet cat

Those who are thirsty drink in silence.

To the brave man every land is a native country.

The cat hides her kittens in seven different places

With a relation eat and drink; but conduct no business with him.

Wood that grows warped can never be straightened.

Young wood makes a hot fire.

The cat says, God blind my master so that I can take all the food; the dog says, God keep my master healthy so he can give me enough food to eat

The man who had ten goats did not go hungry, the man who had ten cows for plowing went hungry

He is following me like a kid (baby goat)

He doesn't know how to split the bail of hay between two donkeys

The donkey told the rooster that he has a big head

Others are born by a mother, we are born by a donkey

Whoever takes someone else's donkey gets stranded in the middle of the way
What do you want with the kid with you

Men prone to tears are good.

Neither promise wax to the saint, nor cakes to the child.

Nothing will content him who is not content with a little.

In baiting a mousetrap with cheese, always leave room for the mouse.
