| Dancing |
| Dancing is a way of
telling a story, or expressing yourself, and this is evident when you
see a dancer in Cyprus, the emotions being expressed with every move. It
would seem that there is a dance to cover every every occasion. Something that causes confusion to the visitor, is one referred to as the best mans dance, this is in reference to when the best man (Koumbaros) leads the bride and groom round the alter three times. Cyprus has some of the oldest dances in the Greek world. Men and women dance separately, or in couples facing each other, as in the Antikristi. Cyprus was once well known for it's weaving and embroidery, two of the women's dances reflect this in the use of the hands to mimic sewing. Women dance demurely, men are more lively and showy; dances include Zeimbekikos Aptalikos, Karsilamades Zeimbekikos Koftos, and Syrtos. For national costume see Customs A rather wonderful site
